Benefits Of Vehicle Wheelchair Lifts

Transportation is often one of the biggest challenges for handicapped people. While most people can be prepared for work in 15 minutes, disabled people may take hours. Often times, senior citizen vans or buses take the physically challenged to necessary appointments, work, and home. While the service is commendable, only certain times of the days are available. Thus, the handicapped accessible personal vehicle is preferable. Thankfully, now vehicle wheelchair lifts are available for converting various vehicles for accessibility as the driver or the passenger.

Braun makes one example of an excellent wheelchair lift. Many commercial and personal vehicles are equipped with a standard lift. Installed in the rear or side entrances of the vehicle, a rectangular left raises the entire chair and its occupant into the waiting vehicle. Once level with the vehicle floor, that handicapped individual or his/her caregiver can easily push the chair into position. Once inside, the simple touch of a button folds lamp into the vehicle, and the doors shut. As the driver, a wheelchair-bound person simply clamps his/her share into place, and drives with specially designed hand controls. As a passenger, a caregiver can easily secure the wheelchair.

Although vans and public buses are the usual modes of transportation for the handicapped, many individuals prefer the ability to choose another automobile. For example, pickups are increasing in popularity. To provide the option of converting a pickup to handicapped accessibility, companies like Bruno have developed a unique wheelchair lift. If the physically disabled have sufficient upper body strength, lifting a paralyzed body into the cab is possible. Once in the cab, the wheelchair is hooked to the Bruno lift. Activated, the wheelchair is hoisted above the truck bed and lowered for transportation. Upon reaching the destination, a simple switch powers the lift to reverse the process. As a result, many disabled individuals can now choose a less expensive means of transportation.

Today, less expensive compact vehicles can also be converted to accommodate a handicapped accessible rise. For example, the PT cruiser can be equipped with remote-controlled upward swinging doors and a lowered ramp. Once inside, the push of a button folds the ramp and lowers the doors. Once clamped into place, the disabled can either drive ride or ride in the passenger side. Also, the rear seat is still available for ambulatory passengers.

Thanks to inventive, and kindhearted entrepreneurs, disabled individuals can benefit from the independence and convenience of personal transportation. No longer restricted to public transportation, many handicapped people can drive to jobs, run errands, and participate in everyday activities. Likewise, caregivers have the freedom to transport their charges whenever the need arises. Electronically altered vehicles make life a lot easier for the physically challenged.
