Standing Wheelchair – You Can Stand Tall Too!
One of the biggest frustrations associated with a wheelchair confining disability is always viewing life from a sitting position. Sometimes, the handicapped would do almost anything to have one minute to stand on his/her own to feet, and live life from an upright perspective. For a brief time, the daily activities most people do without thinking will also be easy for the disabled. Unfortunately, regardless of the best efforts to the contrary, most wheelchair-bound patients are resigned to looking up at the world. But, what if, for just one moment, the dream of standing could come true? For some, the dream will soon become a reality with a standing wheelchair.
In reality, the technology is already available to help the disabled stand tall. The standing wheelchair comes in a manual and electric model. However, being a relatively new technology, the standing wheelchair may be cost prohibitive for many physically challenged individuals. Without financial aid, the dream is still beyond reach.
However, can one really put a price on the ability to stand? The emotional, social, and physical benefits may truly far outweigh the cost. Without a second thought, most people have no concept of the emotional affects of sitting for a lifetime. The simple joy of standing to cook, wash the dishes, and reach the cupboards is lost to the able-bodied. Instead, many simply complain about kitchen chores. Until a person has to constantly ask for help reaching needed items, gets a lap full of water while leaning trying to lean over the sink, or cooking from an odd angle to reach the oven and stove, he/she will not understand what a difference the standing wheelchair would make to a handicapped individual’s emotional well-being.
For many, the social aspects of a standing wheelchair would make all the difference in the world. Reaching a high shelf in a grocery store can be a real problem. Oftentimes, the disabled have to ask a complete stranger for assistance, or go completely without a needed item. In addition, people absentmindedly walk into a wheelchair-bound person because the chair is well below the normal line of vision. In some cases, crowds can actually provoke panic attacks. For example, Christmas time is a socially crazy time of year. Stores are packed with stressed shoppers trying to find the perfect gift. In a sea of legs, the handicapped individual has lost sight of his/her family. Being able to stand, for one brief moment, a standing wheelchair would quickly alleviate the social pressures associated with being incapable of shopping independently, or the panic of being separated from the family.
More importantly, a standing wheelchair provides a unique opportunity to improve one’s health. For instance, poor circulation is a natural result of being confined to a wheelchair. Swollen legs and ankles and pressure sores come with the territory. Disabled individuals are also more susceptible to bladder infections, and other health problems due to a sedentary lifestyle. Thus, a standing wheelchair allows the user to periodically stand throughout the day, and improving the chances for avoiding additional health problems.
In conclusion, a price cannot be placed on the ability to stand, when a life is confined to a wheelchair. Thus, the standing wheelchair is a dream come true, for the people who can afford a specialized chair. In addition to the physical, the potential emotional and social benefits are without measure. So dare to dream and take a stand in the awesome standing wheelchair.
